Salem’s Newest Restaurant
Set in the historic Newmark building in the heart of downtown Salem, Counter is our modern take on a lunch counter with a dining experience rooted in fresh, simple, modern food.
Our Salem restaurant features an open-concept kitchen and dining for 50 on the first floor of The Hotel Salem and outdoor patio seating for 30. The bar, lounge, lunch, and dinner service are open to the public Tuesday-Sunday.
Executive Chef Justin Perdue has created a menu celebrating regional New England flavors, featuring clever starters, breads, and main dishes, as well as handmade pasta dishes crafted with our traditional pasta-making machine.
Counter is for the people of our small but vibrant city as well as for those passing through to gather over conversation, cocktails, and great food.

Group Executive Chef Justin Perdue
Originally from a small town in Wisconsin, Justin Perdue was hired to oversee a number of Lark Hotels restaurants and has lent his creative energy to creating a new menu for Counter and The Roof at The Hotel Salem, while also overseeing Eli’s Tavern in Falmouth, Massachusetts.
Before joining Lark Hotels, Justin worked within the Hotel Sofitel group as an Executive Chef, at both the Chicago and Philadelphia locations. Prior to his stints with Sofitel, Chef Perdue worked in many renowned kitchens, including Bobby Flay's Bar Americain where he honed his skills while attending NYC’s International Culinary Center, NoMi inside the Park Hyatt Chicago, and Topolobampo, where he gained experience under famed chef Rick Bayless.
With a passion for both the industry and the creativity he encounters every day, Justin brings years of inspiration and education to his newest position as Executive Chef of Counter and The Roof. When he isn’t working, Justin is based in Vermont where he tackles the scenic parks and trails of Stowe alongside his wife and two dogs.
The Hotel Salem is a vibrant and one-of-a-kind accommodation on the North Shore of Boston. This 44-room boutique Salem hotel is now open in the middle of the action on the bustling Essex Street pedestrian mall in the city center.
Housed in a former high-end clothing store space, our lively Salem MA hotel features mid-century modern décor with vintage, retail-inspired touches that embrace its stylish past. Inspired by the New England department stores of yesteryear, our decor mixes midcentury modern design with funky details from stores in the ’50s and ’60s. Our Salem hotel truly pays homage to the last gasp of the downtown anchor store—before the days of strip malls and big-box chains.
Unique among Salem restaurants, The Roof offers Salem’s only rooftop bar and restaurant serving the necessities—strong drinks and simple food. Located at the top of The Hotel Salem, this seasonal dining space features an outdoor kitchen and expansive views of Salem’s cobblestone streets and bustling harbor. Here you can find some of the best-crafted cocktails in the area, as well as tacos, ceviche, and oysters.
Closed for the season, reopening in May 2019.
